Breakfast for Your Brain

An Innovative 20 Session Mind Aerobics Program
As aging professionals, we are all passionate about keeping seniors active, healthy, and socially connected. In these days of shrinking budgets, many of the “mind” programs available are either expensive to purchase, require multiple computers or need a support staff to coordinate.
That was the driving force behind the development of Breakfast for Your Brain. Realizing that many activity programs struggle with the same issues that we are faced with, our mission was to organize currently available source materials into a cookie cutter program that can be easily duplicated in your setting.
Based on the findings of Marge Engleman, Madison, WI. and her work, “Aerobics of the Mind,” the goal of this program is to encourage participants to realize the benefits of consistent mental exercise combined with a commitment for physical activity and good nutrition.
The 20 sessions have been designed to be used in a stand-alone format, with each session taking approximately one hour to complete, depending on the individual group. Areas that the sessions focus on are Nutrition, How your brain works, Humor, Using visuals to stimulate - puzzles, optical illusions, creative art,  Left/Right brain activities,  Listening as a brain enhancer, expressing opinions - reminiscing exercises, Word games, and Memory building exercise.
Included in each binder is a session leaders guide and sample participant materials. Copies of all printed materials are on included on a CD to ease reproduction time. Each session has been designed so that individual leaders can easily incorporate their own activities to tailor it to their group.
Breakfast For Your Brain is an Honorable Mention Recipient of the 2008 CVS/pharmacy and NCOA/NISC Prescription for Better Health & Wellness Award, presented at the 2008 NCOA-American Society on Aging (ASA) Aging in America conference in Washington, DC.
Dr. Tracy Hoffman, Geriatric Services and Dr. Cameron Goetz, Tamarack Behavioral Clinic, have reviewed the basic tenets of the program and a number of the sessions. Both have given input on the program design and have given it positive reviews.
